How to Use This Calculator

Enter the room length and width in feet, pick a tile size and pattern, and set the grout joint width. The calculator returns tiles, boxes, grout pounds, and a cost estimate in one viewport — including pattern-specific waste so you do not under-order. Default values mirror a standard 8×10 ft bathroom in 12×12 ceramic with a 1/8-inch joint.

Step 1: Enter Your Room Dimensions

Measure the floor or wall in feet. For an L-shaped floor, switch the calculator to total square feet and add each rectangle separately. The square footage calculator handles odd shapes if you need to break a room into rectangles first.

Step 2: Select Tile Size and Pattern

Pick ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, or mosaic to load default sizes and price bands. Override the tile length and width in inches if your product is non-standard. Choose straight, diagonal, or herringbone — the waste factor adjusts automatically and is shown next to the tile count.

Step 3: Set Grout Joint Width

The default joint width is 1/8 inch (0.125), the most common ceramic floor spacing. Joints up to 1/8 inch use unsanded grout; wider joints use sanded grout. Wet rooms — showers, steam rooms, pools — should use epoxy grout, and the calculator will flag that if you tick the wet-area box.

Step 4: Review Your Results

The output shows tiles needed, boxes, grout pounds, and bullnose pieces if you ticked the trim box. The cost row sums tile material plus labor at the RSMeans 2025 band of $5–$10 per square foot. Use the “Copy result” button to send the line items to your supplier or contractor.

Section 02

Understanding Waste Factors by Pattern

The tile waste factor is the extra percentage of tile you order to cover cuts, breakage, and pattern alignment. Straight (grid) layouts need 10%. Diagonal (45-degree) layouts need 15%. Herringbone needs 15–20% because every wall produces triangular off-cuts and staggered cuts increase breakage. Order at the high end of each band for irregular rooms, large-format tile, or natural stone.

Straight Lay (Grid Pattern): 10% Waste

A grid layout aligns every tile flush with its neighbor on a square grid. Cuts only happen at the room perimeter, so a 10×10 ft floor with 12×12 ceramic tile produces almost no off-cut waste. Add 10% to cover edge cuts at doorways, plumbing penetrations, and the occasional tile broken during install.

Diagonal (45-Degree) Pattern: 15% Waste

Rotating the field 45 degrees turns every perimeter cut into a triangular off-cut. Two adjoining triangles will rarely match the next pair you cut, so most are scrap. Industry practice is to add 15% — and 17% if the room has more than two corners or built-in features.

Herringbone Pattern: 15–20% Waste

Herringbone uses rectangular planks set perpendicular at every joint. The pattern creates triangular cuts on every wall plus internal cuts where the staggered field hits trims, niches, or thresholds. Breakage runs higher because each plank sits in tighter alignment with its neighbors. Add 17.5% for typical rooms and 20% for natural stone or large-format planks.

Grout Amount Estimator

Grout volume depends on three inputs: tile size, joint width, and total area. Smaller tiles have more perimeter per square foot, so a mosaic floor uses several times more grout per square foot than a 24×24 large-format floor. The calculator above returns grout in pounds, converts to kilograms, and tells you whether to use sanded or unsanded based on your joint width.

Grout Calculation Formula

The calculator uses the volume-of-voids method:

Grout (lb) = (Tile Perimeter × Joint Width × Tile Thickness ÷ Effective Tile Area)
             × Total Area × Grout Density

Tile perimeter and effective tile area come from your tile dimensions and joint width. Tile thickness defaults to industry standards for ceramic, porcelain, and stone (about 6, 8, and 10 mm). Sanded vs. Unsanded Grout: Which Do You Need?

Joint width is the only decision input you need:

  • Joint ≤ 1/8 inch — use unsanded grout. Sand particles will not pack into the narrow joint and will look gritty against polished tile.
  • Joint > 1/8 inch — use sanded grout. The sand carries the cement bond across wider gaps without shrinkage cracks.
  • Wet rooms — switch to epoxy grout regardless of joint width. Epoxy resists chemicals, mildew, and soaps better than cementitious grout. Tick the wet-area box in the calculator to flag it.

Section 04

Bullnose and Trim Tile Estimator

Bullnose tile finishes any exposed edge that runs into open space — the top of a half-wall, the corner of a backsplash, the open side of a shower curb. The calculator returns bullnose pieces based on the linear feet of exposed edge you enter. Standard bullnose comes in 6-inch lengths, so a 4-foot countertop edge needs 8 pieces with 1–2 extras for cuts at corners.

Measure exposed edge length in linear feet, not square feet. To find it, walk the perimeter of every tiled surface and count only the edges that meet open air or a different finish — drywall, paint, countertop, or curb top. Internal edges where two tiled surfaces meet do not need bullnose; they get covered by the next tile.

Common bullnose locations:

  • Top of a tiled half-wall or pony wall — full length of the wall.
  • Outside corner of a tiled column or column wrap — full height on each face.
  • Open ends of a backsplash where it meets cabinet returns or open wall.
  • Top of a tiled shower curb — width plus both 4-inch end returns.
  • Window sill returns inside a tiled shower — full sill length plus 4-inch returns.
Note
If your tile line ships without dedicated bullnose, ask the supplier about Schluter or similar metal trim profiles. Metal trim is sold in 8-foot lengths and protects the cut edge of field tile, removing the bullnose count from the order entirely.

Tile Cost Estimator

Total tile cost has two parts: material and labor. Material runs $1–$20 per square foot depending on tile type. Installation labor runs $5–$10 per square foot per RSMeans 2025 unit pricing and HomeAdvisor 2025 cost data. The calculator above sums both at the bands below — and if you enter your supplier's actual price, it overrides the band with your real cost.

Installation Labor Cost

The $5–$10 per sq ft labor band assumes a clean substrate, straight-lay or simple diagonal pattern, and standard 12×12 to 12×24 tile. Add 20% for natural stone or large-format installs that require leveling clips. Add 35–50% for herringbone, mosaic sheet, or full-height shower walls. Real Project Example: 8×10 Bathroom Floor

A standard secondary bathroom — 8 ft × 10 ft = 80 sq ft of floor area — laid in 12×12 ceramic tile on a 45-degree diagonal pattern with a 1/8-inch grout joint. This is the most-requested combination in the tile calculator SERP and the default scenario the calculator above loads.
